What Is Endodontics?
Endodontics refers to the treatment of the dental pulp and root system. Endodontists care for a variety of painful conditions including dental abscess, pulpal inflammation and dental trauma. Advanced techniques resolve infections in the dental pulp and root canal system, relieving pain while preserving natural teeth.
Here are selected benefits of endodontic services:
Relieving Pain
The primary goal shared by endodontists is relieving dental pain. Teeth that need root canals or other procedures may cause great discomfort. Endodontists dedicate themselves to relieving pain and returning the teeth to full function.
Saving Natural Teeth
With a properly completed root canal, frequently, a patient can avoid having a tooth extracted.
Improving Your Appearance
Procedures like internal tooth bleaching can brighten a tooth’s appearance and reverse the possible negative effects of dental trauma.
Procedures Offered
Root Canal Therapy
Root canals focus on cleaning infected and inflamed tissues from inside teeth. The endodontist opens the tooth through the crown, accesses the pulpal tissues or infection inside the root system, and removes those tissues The doctor then seals those spaces within the root system with specialized filling material called gutta percha. A general dentist then places a filling or permanent crown over the tooth.
Endodontic Retreatment
Sometimes root canals fail. There may be infection that was unable to be cleared the first time. Some patients also have complex canal structures that make it harder to perform a successful root canal. In these cases, the patient will need a follow-up procedure in the form of endodontic retreatment.
Apical Surgery
Also known as an apicoectomy or root-end resection, apical surgery involves making an incision in the gum tissues to work on the root end of the tooth, where infections may be inaccessible during a typical root canal.
Cracked Teeth
Diagnosing cracked teeth is complex. Endodontists can do so by using microscopes and other advanced equipment. Endodontists treat cracked teeth by removing infected or inflamed pulp tissue that has become exposed by the crack. Following root canal treatment, a general dentist will place a crown over the cracked tooth to protect it from cracking further.
Dental Trauma
When a patient receives a significant blow to the face, as in a fall or sports accident, teeth may need immediate treatment. Dental injuries often require root canals to repair the damage. Endodontists can also treat knocked-out (avulsed) and dislodged (luxated) teeth.
Pulpotomy
In many cases, a pulpotomy (or "baby root canal") can save a child's natural tooth, though the child may need a crown placed following the procedure. A pulpotomy removes infected or inflamed pulp tissue from a primary tooth's interior. It treats infection and toothache.
Regenerative Endodontics
Regenerative endodontics involves advanced procedures that place engineered tissue in immature permanent teeth that have yet to fully develop. The endodontist can replace the patient's damaged pulp tissue, allowing the tooth canals to continue developing.
Internal Bleaching
Some teeth may darken in color when compared to their neighbors. This issue may occur following root canal treatment or traumatic injury to a tooth. The endodontist can bleach badly discolored teeth from the inside using a bleaching paste. These teeth typically do not respond to traditional in-office teeth whitening.

Frequently Asked Questions About Endodontic Services
Are root canals painful?
A root canal should not be painful. Today's root canals are as comfortable as any other dental procedure with excellent local anesthesia. Afterward, there may be some tenderness in the tooth and jaw that should respond to over-the-counter pain relievers.
How long do root canals take?
A root canal takes between 45 to 60 minutes on average. Longer procedures may be tiring and cause more jaw soreness. Infected teeth may require 2 appointments to complete with an antibacterial medicament placed inside the tooth to help healing for 2-3 weeks.
How can I prevent cracked teeth?
If you grind your teeth when feeling stressed, try to recognize when you are grinding. Do not chew on ice, pens, unpopped popcorn, or other hard objects. If you grind or clench your teeth during the night, ask a dentist to prescribe a custom night guard.
What should I do if I have a knocked-out tooth?
Please put it in a glass of milk or safely inside your cheek and call your endodontist immediately. The faster the tooth is put back in its socket, the more likely it is to replant properly. The endodontist can use a splint or other appliance to keep the tooth in place while it heals.
